A Vancouver man, who has been the target of a widespread police search, has died.

Nazariy Gelitiy, 24 years old of Vancouver, British Columbia was last seen September 12, 2020 near Roussin Road in Machin Township (west of Dryden). His car had been discovered abandoned in the area on September 12, prompting police to issue a search, out of concern for the man’s well-being.

On September 19, 2020 he was located by OPP officers where an interaction took place. He was subsequently transported to hospital for medical attention, where he died as a result of a fatal gunshot wound.

Police found Gelitiy in a wooded area, armed with a weapon, according to a release issued by the Special Investigations Unit. However, it is not believed thatany officer discharched a weapon, it said.

The SIU is leading an investigating the incident. It is a civilian body, governed by the government of Ontario, which investigates all events in which people are injured, killed or are sexually abused in the presence of police.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information regarding this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

DRUG SEIZURE IN GREENSTONE

(GREENSTONE, ON) - On September 16, 2020 officers from the Ontario Provincial Police Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau and the North West Region Community Street Crime Unit executed a search warrant at a 3rd Avenue residence in Geraldton.

As a result of the search warrant Police seized 16.2 grams of suspected crack cocaine, 6.9 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 8.8 grams of psilocybin (mushrooms) and 1 oxycodone tablet, Canadian currency, 3 conductive energy weapons (tasers), brass knuckles and other drug related paraphernalia. 

A 25 year-old Greenstone man has been charged with the following offences: Possession of a Schedule III substance for the purpose of Trafficking; Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine; Traffick in a Schedule I substance – Cocaine; Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine; Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon X 6; Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5000; Fail to Comply with Undertaking

The accused was held in custody and will appear again by audio in the Ontario Court of Justice on September 21, 2020.

A 27 year-old woman from Greenstone has been charged with the following: Possession of a Schedule III substance for the purpose of Trafficking; Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine; Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine; Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5000; Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon X 6.

The accused was released and will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice next on October 22, 2020 to answer to the charges.

KIDNAPPING IN NIPIGON

 

(NIPIGON, ON) - On September 14, 2020, officers of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Nipigon Detachment were dispatched to a report of a male having been abducted, forcibly confined and assaulted with a firearm in the town of Nipigon. The victim escaped his captures and received assistance from a witness who contacted police.

The victim was transported to hospital with significant injuries.

As a result of the investigation four suspects have been identified, two have been arrested.

A 29 year-old Thunder Bay man has been arrested and charged with the following offences:

Kidnapping while using certain firearms; Aggravated Assault; Assault with a Weapon and a variety of firearm related offences.

A 32 year-old of Nipigon man has been arrested and charged with the following offences:

Kidnapping while using certain firearms; Aggravated Assault; Assault with a Weapon and a variety of firearm related offences.

On 15 September 2020, both accused appeared in the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay and have been remanded into custody.

Members of the North West Region Crime Unit are continuing their investigation and a police presence remains in the community.
