After a tough start to the season, things got a little brighter for the Rainy River Community College Voyageurs women's volleyball team last Wednesday.
The squad, which includes former Muskies Hailee Barnard and Alex Spuzak, split its games to improve its record to 1-5.
After dropping their first game of the day in straight sets to the Mesabi Range CTC by scores of 25-19, 25-21, and 25-16, the Voyageurs responded with their first win of the season as they downed UW Barron County 3-0.
The set scores were 25-17, 25-20, and 26-24.
Barnard registered eight kills in the win while Spuzak had two.
The Voyageurs resume action tonight when they host the Northland CTC Pioneers at 6:30 p.m.
RRCC then will conclude the week with a trio of games on Saturday.
The Voyageurs will tangle with the Anoka-Ramsey CC Rams at 9 a.m. followed by battling Bethel JV at 1 p.m. before taking on St. Thomas JV at 3.

The Muskie football team's annual training camp continues every weeknight this week.
Practice sessions now begin at 3:30 p.m. each day at Fort High.
Students in Grades 9-12 are welcome to attend and full equipment must be worn.
The Muskies' first game of the WHSFL season is set for Sept. 13 on the road against the Springfield Collegiate Sabres.

Muskie hockey tryouts are just around the corner.
The sessions will take place at the Memorial Sports Centre, with the girls' running 3:45-5:15 p.m. on Sept. 9-10 before switching from 5:15-6:45 p.m. on Sept. 11-12.
The boys' sessions, meanwhile, will take place from 5:15-6:45 p.m. on Sept. 9-10 before switching to 3:45-5:15 p.m. on Sept. 11-12.
Registration will take place before the first ice time at the Memorial Sports Centre.
There also will be a $50 tryout fee for both teams
