Seniors claim KIT crown

Category:

Talk about a statement weekend for the Muskie senior boys' basketball team.

The black-and-gold won all three of their games en route to claiming the title at the Kenora Invitational Tournament hosted by the Broncos on Friday and Saturday.

Facing the Atikokan Voyageurs in Saturday night's final, the Muskies flexed their muscles in a 57-48 win to snare the gold.

“I'm not 100 percent sure but [co-coach] Bryce [Coyle] and I were talking and the last time the Muskies won the KIT, he was in school and I was a first teacher [back in] 1999,” noted Muskie co-coach Greg Ste. Croix.

“We started on time in each game, [and] we worked really hard on both ends of the floor,” he said.

The Muskies had opened tourney play Friday afternoon with a 65-52 win over the Sioux Lookout Warriors.

Then they dumped the Westgate Tigers (Thunder Bay) 57-46 in the semi-finals Saturday afternoon to set up the gold-medal game against Atikokan that night.

“We really had no practices over the exam break due to the extremely cold weather,” Ste. Croix noted.

“We got everyone involved in the game and as we got our legs under us, we got better and better.”

The Muskies, who currently sport a 6-1 record to sit in first place in NorWOSSA play, next are in action tomorrow afternoon when they host the Voyageurs in an exhibition game at the “Fish Tank.”

Then they'll conclude NorWOSSA regular-season action next Tuesday (Feb. 12) in Dryden against the Eagles.

“Trying to get our game to another level, focusing in on improving our fundamentals,” Ste. Croix said about what his squad would be working to improve on heading into next week's game in Dryden.

“The biggest key for us is to just keep trying to develop our defence and offence,” he stressed.

“Keep working on our basic skills.”

The NorWOSSA playoffs then are slated for next Friday (Feb. 15) in Kenora.

The Muskies have a bye to the final by virtue of clinching first place in the regular season.
