Muskie pucksters shut out Eagles

Category:

New year, same Muskie dominance.

Both the girls' and boys' hockey teams took care of business yesterday—earning shutout victories over the Dryden Eagles in NorWOSSA action at “The Duke” (Couchiching Arena).

Annalise (CC) Hayes scored the game-winning goal with just over 10 minutes to go to lead the black-and-gold (10-0-1) to a narrow 1-0 victory.

Early penalty trouble in the first period could have spelled disaster for the black-and-gold, with Emily Kaun and Siobhan Mackintosh both getting sent off for tripping within a minute of each other to hand the Eagles a two-man advantage.

But Kamryn Sandelovich stood tall between the pipes to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes.

The two teams traded power-play chances in the second period but neither Sandelovich nor Eagles' goalie Hannah Zilkalns would give an inch to produce yet another scoreless period.

Hayes finally broke the deadlock in the third, jamming the puck past Zilkalns to provide all the offence the Muskies' would need.

Sandelovich took things from there and kept the Eagles at bay to earn the shutout.

The squad was coming off a more emphatic victory Tuesday night after routing the host Kenora Broncos 12-0.

Hayes scored six times in that one while Reece McQuaker added a pair to pace the Muskie onslaught.

Mackintosh, Jessica Steele, Jillian Calder, and Alex Gartzke added singles while Carly McKinnon earned the shutout in goal.

In boys' action, meanwhile, the Muskies used a stingy defensive effort to blank the Eagles 4-0 and improve to 8-0 in NorWOSSA play.

Reed Bodnar opened the scoring just under six minutes into the opening period, with Cole Allan and Brett Kenny drawing assists.

Byron Stewart then scored unassisted to give the Muskies a 2-0 lead with 6:21 left in the frame.

Jake Barker made it a three-goal deficit for the Eagles after netting a power-play marker with 8:25 to go in the second.

Eric Pitkanen and Bodnar assisted on Barker's goal.

Allan capped the scoring at 5:19 of the third, with Stewart collecting the lone assist.

Darian Klem earn the shutout in goal.

Tuesday night saw the Muskie boys double the host Kenora Broncos 6-3 to sweep their season-series (3-0).

Eric Pitkanen tallied twice in that one while Kaden Nelson, Mikel Ward, Bodnar, and Peyton Avis added singles.

Klem once again picked up the win.

Both Muskie teams now are on a two-week break for exams.

The girls next see action Jan. 29 in Dryden against the Eagles while the boys will host the International Falls Broncos at 7:15 p.m. that night at the Ice For Kids Arena.
