Lakers fall to Norskies

Category:

The Thief River Falls Norskies showed Friday night just why they are the best team in the SIJHL.

Parker Simonson and Boe Bjore each netted a pair of goals as the Norskies skated to a 7-3 win over the Fort Frances Lakers at the Ice For Kids Arena.

The loss was the Lakers' fifth in a row.

The Norskies open the scoring less than two minutes into the game on Jared Pedersen's tally.

Christian Larsen doubled the lead at 10:16 on a feed from Cameron Jones and Pedersen.

Bjore then tallied a short-handed marker at 18:17 to give the Norskies a 3-0 lead heading into the second period.

That goal also spelled the end of the night for Lakers' starting goalie Ismael Ralsten, who was replaced by Brett Akins.

Lakers' head coach Wayne Strachan noted after the game that Ralsten wasn't feeling well, so that may have been a factor in his first-period performance.

The Norskies continued to pour it on early in the second as Bjore notched his second of the night just 1:04 in.

Mitchell Soderberg then made it 5-0 at 14:19, with Simonson and Brett Piper drawing the assists.

The Lakers finally got on the board 23 seconds later on a goal by Ian Jarvis.

Simonson made it 6-1 six minutes into the final frame.

The Lakers tried to make a game of it, getting quick strikes from Jaedin Ness, at 8:37, and Carter Chorney, at 8:54, to make it 6-3.

But Simonson sealed the win at 12:07, firing home his second of the game past Akins.

Despite the score, shots on goal actually favoured the Lakers by a 36-35 margin.

Special teams were a factor as the Norskies went 1-for-2 with the man advantage while the Lakers were 0-for-6.

The fifth-place Lakers (6-14-1-1) return to action tomorrow night when they visit the fourth-place English River Miners (9-11-0-2).

The Norskies (22-1-0-0) lead the six-team league, with the Dryden GM Ice Dogs (16-2-3-1) sitting in second place.

The Thunder Bay North Stars (14-7-3-0) are in third while the Minnesota Iron Rangers (1-19-1-2) remain in the basement.
