Local MP Don Rusnak has withdrawn his name as the Liberal candidate for Thunder Bay-Rainy River in the federal election set for this October.

In a statement released yesterday, Rusnak said he wants to spend more time with his young family.

Rusnak, who was elected handily in 2015, also said he is proud of what has been achieved in the region these past few years,.

He believes relationships are key to continuing progress in the region and in Canada as a whole.

“Thank you to my hard-working and dedicated staff, and all the people of Thunder Bay-Rainy River for allowing me to serve as your Member of Parliament,” Rusnak noted.

“I look forward to the continuing work as I serve as your [MP] during the rest of my mandate,” he added.

Back in early December, Rusnak said he would seek a second term as MP for Thunder Bay-Rainy River in this fall's federal election.

He was acclaimed as the Liberal candidate in November and officially was the first person to throw their hat into the ring.

Earlier this month, Linda Rydholm was chosen as the Conservative Party candidate for Thunder Bay-Rainy River.
