Drinking water gets A+

The town's drinking water got an A+ on it most recent report card.

Town council accepted the 2017 drinking water system annual report during its regular meeting last night, acknowledging the staff “for their hard work to ensure that consumers connected to the town's water system receive outstanding water.”

“We have no deficiencies this year at all,” Coun. Ken Perry lauded.

“We've seen little ones in the past, never any big ones that really bothered anybody—crossing 't's and dotting 'i's,” he noted.

“And this year, there was none indicated at all.”

In other news, council received a request from the Fort Frances and District Doctor Recruitment & Retention Committee for an additional $67,000 to assist with the 2018 recruitment and retention budget, with no further action taken at this point.

In January, the committee made the request for the funding above and beyond the $68,000 the town already had allocated in its draft budget.

At its Feb. 6 meeting, the Administration and Finance executive committee recommended the recruitment committee make a presentation to council, but that request then was denied by the committee.

As such, the Administration and Finance executive committee then recommended council simply receive the request.

Also at last night's meeting, council:

  • agreed to send a letter to the Town of Essex in support of its resolution re: offering school property to municipalities;
  • agreed to change the zoning designation for 560 Webster Ave. from “Institutional" to "Residential Type 2,” and further direct that a bylaw be brought forward;
  • agreed to change the zoning designation for 201 Minnie Ave. from “Tourist Commercial" to "Residential Type 2,” and further direct that a bylaw be brought forward;
  • accepted a draft site control plan agreement with the Northwest Catholic District School Board and directed that the corresponding bylaw be executed;
  • agreed to process minutes of settlement for the 2017 taxation year for property located at 1210 Old Shambles Rd.;
  • agreed to support various requests from the Boundary Waters Dragon Boat Festival this year, as recommended by the four executive committees; and
  • agreed to authorize the execution of a lease agreement with Bearskin Lake Air Service LP at the Fort Frances Airport, and passed the accompanying bylaw.
