Christmas parade coming together

Participation is picking up for the 2017 “Community Christmas Parade,” which is set to go this Saturday (Dec. 2) along Scott Street.

As of yesterday afternoon, a total of 15 floats (not counting emergency services' vehicles or Santa's sleigh) are lined up to take part, parade co-ordinator Scott Krienke-Turvey told the Times.

“We could always use more floats,” he hinted, noting the numbers still are a little down from last year though not drastically.

The theme this year is “Christmas Candyland.”

The deadline to sign up is the end of today (Nov. 30). Those who still have to register a float can do so by e-mailing or going to the new website——and signing up there.

Float set-up will start at 4:30 p.m. on Reid Avenue (by the Fort Frances Public Library). Judging then will take place at 5 p.m. (each float will be judged for originality based on this year's theme).

The parade then will start at 5:30 p.m., proceeding west along Scott Street before ending at Mowat Avenue.

Krienke-Turvey reminded spectators a “Weirdest or Wackiest Hat” contest also will be held during the parade.

All parade attendees are urged to get creative and wear the weirdest or wackiest hat they can find, with prizes to be awarded both for spectators and participants.

Meanwhile, the weather is all-clear for Santa Claus to arrive right on time from the North Pole.

The Fort Frances Lions Club and Fort Frances Voyageur Lions Club have banded together this year to make sure St. Nick's sleigh is looking top-notch for the parade, said Krienke-Turvey.

However, more volunteers still are needed for the parade.

Traffic control is taken care of but Krienke-Turvey said he is looking for a few more float judges, as well as more volunteers to give out candy during the parade.

Those interested should contact him at

Krienke-Turvey also urged the public to check out for more information, including which local businesses are supporting this year's parade.
