Beef Club meets again

The second United Beef Club meeting was held at the home of Neil and Angela Haw on Tuesday, May 28, 2019.

The junior leaders started off our meeting with a halter judging activity.

All members were divided into two groups and had to place leather and rope halters one to five. Each group had to give reasons as to why they placed each halter where they did.

Prevent tick bites

The Northwestern Health Unit (NWHU) is encouraging individuals working or exploring the outdoors with friends, family or pets, to make small changes that can help to prevent tick bites.

The risk of contracting a tick-borne disease is lower if you take steps to prevent tick bites:

Six new fires over weekend

There were six new forest fires in the Northwest Region by the late afternoon yesterday.

At the time of this update there were four active fires in the region, one of which is not under control.

Dryden fire #6 is a 0.1 hectare fire located off McGogy Road, approximately five kilometres north of Dryden. The fire is under control.

Fire hazard rising across region

The forest fire hazard has risen to be high to extreme across most of the region with an area of moderate hazard in Nipigon and northern Sioux Lookout district.

There were four new forest fires confirmed by yesterday afternoon.

Red Lake fire #12 is not under control at 20 hectares and is located near Hansen Lake, approximately 53 kilometres west of Red Lake.

Fatal plane crash in north

At approximately 9:50 a.m. yesterday, officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Red Lake Detachment received a report of a downed aircraft and forest fire in the area of Domain Lake, which is west of Red Lake.

Investigators have determined that both the pilot and the passenger were deceased.
